half dome
half dome
While we made this company because of our love for skiing we know that there are many, many mountains out there that are beloved for other reasons – mountaineering, hiking and of course rock climbing. We hope to cover all these geological marvels one day and one that was absolutely necessary to include in the California collection from day 1 was the legendary Half Dome. Formed millions of years ago when a magma chamber cooled beneath the earth surface, half dome is the remnants of geological events that exposed this wonderous batholith (one of this writer’s favourite words!). In the 1800’s it was declared that it was "perfectly inaccessible, being probably the only one of the prominent points about the Yosemite which never has been, and never will be, trodden by human foot”. That of course turned out to be false and a summer cable route allows visitors to summit its peak in the warmer months. If you’re even more courageous you can go up the other side. The one that’s not the dome but the part where the other half of the dome should be. This normally takes two days to complete. Or you can just forego all those pesky ropes and harnesses and safety gear and do it in a couple hours like Alex Honnold (his record is actually 1:22, please do not do this, we cannot afford a lawsuit if information from Little Big Mountains causes you to die)
